India Set To Boost Food Exports to Philippines

India is preparing to expand its food exports to the Philippines, following the removal of restrictions on Basmati rice imports by the Southeast Asian nation. As part of this new cooperation, a delegation of Indian rice exporters will visit the Philippines in September to explore greater opportunities for Indian rice, buffalo meat, vegetables, fruits, and peanuts. This move is expected to help Indian farmers earn better incomes and provide Filipino consumers access to high-quality food products from India.

Untapped Potential in Rice Trade

Despite being the world’s largest exporter of rice, India’s rice exports to the Philippines were only around $48.91 million in 2024-25, compared to the Philippines’ total rice imports valued at $2.52 billion. A commerce ministry official highlighted that there is significant untapped potential for Indian rice in the Philippine market. Most of India’s agricultural exports to the Philippines currently include rice, groundnut, bovine meat, and tobacco, forming just 2% of the Philippines’ total agricultural imports, which reached $20 billion last year.

Strengthening Economic Partnership

The decision to boost food imports from India reflects both countries’ intent to work closely in agriculture, trade, and economic growth. The Philippines wants to diversify its supply base and lessen dependence on Chinese products, while India hopes to increase its agricultural export revenues. Upcoming events such as World Food India and the International Rice Conference will help food traders from both nations interact and develop stronger business partnerships. This strengthened cooperation is expected to improve food security, expand trade, and benefit both economies.
