UAE Breaks Ground on World’s First Gigascale Round-the-Clock Renewable Energy Project

by Anand Sandil

The United Arab Emirates has launched construction on the world’s first gigascale renewable energy project, combining solar power and massive battery storage to deliver continuous clean energy around the clock. Groundbreaking occurred on October 24, 2025, witnessed by His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, aligning with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s vision for sustainable growth.

Developed by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar) and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), the project integrates a 5.2 gigawatt (GW) solar photovoltaic plant with a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS). Spanning 90 square kilometers, it will produce 1 GW of baseload power 24/7, overcoming solar intermittency through AI-enhanced forecasting, intelligent dispatch, and predictive analytics. With an investment exceeding AED 22 billion ($6 billion), the facility is set to operate by 2027, powering AI data centers and industries while avoiding 5.7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions yearly.

This initiative supports the UAE’s net zero by 2050 strategy and economic diversification, creating over 10,000 jobs and new manufacturing facilities. It positions the UAE as a global clean energy leader, with competitive tariffs making renewables viable for baseload needs. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Masdar Chairman, called it a “blueprint for the world,” redefining renewables for the AI era. Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Masdar CEO, highlighted its role in meeting rising energy demands sustainably.

Ahmed Ali Alshamsi, EWEC CEO, emphasized its support for Abu Dhabi’s AI hub status. The project includes grid-forming and black start capabilities, ensuring reliable dispatch. As global renewables grow to 30% of electricity by 2025, this sets a new standard for scalable, non-intermittent clean power. It could inspire similar deployments worldwide, boosting UAE’s exports in green tech.
