India Unveils First Fully Indigenous 32-bit Chip ‘Vikram’ Built by ISRO

India has proudly unveiled its first fully indigenous 32-bit microprocessor named Vikram-32, developed by ISRO’s Semiconductor Laboratory in Chandigarh. This chip is specially built to withstand the extreme conditions of spaceflight, including intense vibrations, harsh temperatures, and cosmic radiation. Vikram-32 is a major upgrade from the earlier 16-bit Vikram1601 chip, which has powered ISRO launch vehicles since 2009. The new processor supports 152 instructions, floating-point calculations, and significant memory management, making it ideal for satellite navigation, control, and mission management during rocket launches. It was successfully tested on the PSLV-C60 mission, proving its readiness for critical space applications.

Technical Highlights and Applications

The Vikram-32 chip uses a 180-nanometer CMOS fabrication process, which ensures robustness and reliability, critical for space missions. It supports programming in the Ada language, widely used in aerospace, with C language support in progress. The chip also comes with its own in-house developed software tools, including compilers, assemblers, and simulators. Beyond space, Vikram-32’s rugged design makes it suitable for defense, automotive, energy, and aerospace sectors. This marks India’s progress towards self-reliance in semiconductor technology, reducing dependence on imports for high-end, mission-critical processors.

A Symbol of Atmanirbhar Bharat in Semiconductors

The unveiling of Vikram-32 at Semicon India 2025 was a landmark moment, presented by Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It symbolizes India’s growing strength in semiconductor design and manufacturing under the Make-in-India initiative. With ongoing investments in semiconductor manufacturing units and support for design startups, India aims to build a robust ecosystem for next-generation chip innovation. Vikram-32 is a proud step towards technological independence and a gateway for India to emerge as a global player in advanced semiconductor solutions.
