India and Australia have signed a Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) for organic products under the India–Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA). This agreement, signed on September 24, 2025, aims to simplify export procedures by accepting each country’s standards for organic certification. The move is expected to reduce barriers and promote easier access to each other’s markets for organic goods.
Key Organic Products and Market Impact
During the financial year 2024-25, India’s organic exports to Australia reached $8.96 million, totaling 2,781.58 metric tonnes. Leading exports include psyllium husk, coconut milk, and rice, which enjoy strong demand from Australian buyers. The new mutual recognition ensures that products certified in India can enter the Australian market without additional tests, benefiting thousands of Indian organic farmers and processors.
Support for Farmers and Future Prospects
Officials say the agreement supports farmers by expanding access to international markets and helps them earn 30–40% higher prices for certified organic produce. India’s goal is to become the “Organic Food Basket of the World,” and this partnership supports that vision by encouraging better standards, transparency, and regulatory trust. Experts believe the MRA will boost India’s organic exports even further in the coming years, improving farmer incomes and strengthening trade ties between the two nations.
