NTPC Starts 38-MW Solar Operations in Gujarat

by admin

State-owned power giant NTPC Limited has commenced commercial operations of a 38-megawatt (MW) solar power capacity at its Khavda Solar Energy Project in Gujarat. The new unit, which became operational on October 19, 2025, marks another significant step in India’s renewable energy journey and NTPC’s commitment to clean power generation.

The 38-MW capacity is part of the larger 300-MW Khavda Solar Energy Project being developed by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NREL), a step-down subsidiary of NTPC through NTPC Green Energy Limited. This project falls under NTPC’s ambitious 450-MW Hybrid Tranche V program in Gujarat, which aims to accelerate the country’s transition toward sustainable energy.

Phased Project Implementation

The Khavda Solar Project has been implemented in multiple phases throughout 2025. The first segment of 142.2 MW was declared commercially operational on June 28, followed by the second phase of 32.8 MW on June 30, and the third phase of 49.125 MW on August 22. With the latest addition of 37.95 MW, the total operational capacity at the Khavda project has reached 262.07 MW.

This systematic rollout demonstrates NTPC’s strategic approach to large-scale renewable energy deployment, ensuring each phase meets operational standards before progressing to the next segment.

Growing Renewable Portfolio

Following this commissioning, NTPC Green Energy Limited Group’s commercial capacity has increased to 7,515.72 MW, while the total installed capacity now stands at 7,553.675 MW. This expansion strengthens NTPC’s position as one of India’s leading renewable energy players and demonstrates the company’s progress toward achieving its target of 60 GW renewable energy capacity by 2032.

Strategic Partnership with Gujarat

NTPC’s renewable energy push in Gujarat received further momentum when the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government on October 9, 2025. The agreement aims to develop solar parks and projects with a cumulative capacity of 10 GW and wind projects of 5 GW in the state.

The partnership was formalized during the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference held in Mehsana, Gujarat, in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi. This collaboration positions Gujarat as a key hub for NTPC’s renewable energy expansion and supports India’s ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
