Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Micron Technology’s state-of-the-art Semiconductor Assembly, Test and Packaging (ATMP) facility at Sanand in Gujarat. The event marks the start of commercial production and the shipment of the first made-in-India semiconductor memory modules from the plant.

The Sanand facility is the first project approved under the India Semiconductor Mission, with total investment of over ₹22,500 crore. Construction began with a groundbreaking in September 2023, and the plant is now ready to convert advanced DRAM and NAND wafers into finished memory products for global markets. The site features nearly 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, among the largest raised-floor cleanrooms in the world.

Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said the microchip will be the key regulator of this century, just as oil shaped the last one. He described the inauguration as a shift for India from being known mainly for software to becoming a serious player in hardware and global semiconductor value chains. He also called it a symbol of strong India–US partnership in securing chip and AI supply chains.

Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the semiconductor industry is foundational and that India has now firmly established its position on the global map. He noted sixfold growth in electronics manufacturing and eightfold growth in electronics exports under the current government, with mobile phones among India’s top exported items.

Under Semiconductor Mission 2.0, ten major projects are being developed across India, creating a pan-India ecosystem from Sanand to Noida and Assam. The Micron plant strengthens India’s role in the global chip supply chain and supports rising domestic demand from electronics, automotive and AI sectors.
