India Set to Achieve ₹50,000 Crore Defence Export Target by 2028-29: DRDO Chairman

India is on course to meet its ambitious defence export target of ₹50,000 crore by 2028-29, according to Dr Samir V Kamat, Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The sharp rise in demand for Indian-made systems such as Pinaka rocket launchers, BrahMos supersonic missiles, ATAGS (Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System), and Akash missile systems is driving this momentum. Countries in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa have shown strong interest in these technologies, with exports expected to double within the next few years. In 2024-25, India’s defence exports reached a record ₹23,622 crore, marking a 12% increase from the previous year.

Government Initiatives Fuelling Export Growth

The government’s proactive policies have played a key role in India’s rising defence exports. Initiatives such as ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) and ‘Make in India’ have encouraged both public and private companies to develop advanced defence systems locally. Schemes like production-linked incentives (PLI), streamlined export procedures, and higher foreign direct investment (FDI) limits have added to the sector’s competitiveness. Defence production also hit an all-time high of ₹150,590 crore in 2024-25, showing robust growth and international confidence in India’s manufacturing capabilities.

Strengthening India’s Position in the Global Defence Market

India now supplies defence equipment to nearly 80 countries, expanding its export portfolio from ammunition and weapons to patrol boats, radars, and more sophisticated systems. DRDO’s continued investment in research and development has resulted in world-class products that are trusted globally. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has commended the relentless efforts of all stakeholders, calling the achievements a sign of India’s strengthening defence industrial base. These milestones reflect India’s transformation from an importer to a builder and exporter of defence technologies, marking its emergence as a major global player in the sector.
