India and Philippines Forge Stronger Ties with Nine New Agreements

India and the Philippines have taken a major step to boost their relationship by signing nine Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) across key areas. These pacts were signed during the state visit of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to India and mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries. The new agreements focus on expanding defence collaboration, promoting joint military exercises, technology sharing, and supporting the Philippines’ defence modernization program—including increased cooperation over Indian-made platforms like the BrahMos missile system. In the field of digital technology, India has agreed to help the Philippines set up its own digital cloud infrastructure and extend India’s public digital platforms, like UPI, to help the Philippines develop a robust national identity system and improve their digital services. Both countries also agreed to strengthen collaboration in space technology, including satellite launches and joint research, so the Philippines can benefit from India’s affordable and advanced space capabilities.

Maritime, Tourism, and Cultural Bonds Strengthened

Recognizing their strategic locations, maritime security and cooperation formed a vital part of the talks. India and the Philippines agreed to boost their cooperation in shipbuilding, coastal surveillance, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief. The two countries committed to conducting more joint maritime exercises and sharing best practices to ensure peaceful and sustainable use of the oceans. The new agreements aim to promote a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region. Additionally, to celebrate their shared heritage, India and the Philippines will offer visa-free travel for Indian tourists to the Philippines and free e-visas for Filipinos visiting India. This, combined with the announcement of direct flights between Delhi and Manila (starting October 2025), is expected to make travel and cultural exchanges much easier for both peoples.

Laying the Groundwork for Future Growth

The MoUs also covered other areas like mutual legal assistance, scientific research, and trade negotiations. Both nations agreed to begin talks on a preferential trade agreement to boost two-way commerce, which already stands at $3.3billion as of 2024-25. India will launch more quick-impact projects in the Philippines, offer additional scholarships for Filipino professionals, and expand youth exchange programs. The leaders emphasized their shared commitment to peace, innovation, and prosperity. Through these agreements, India and the Philippines aim to create a modern partnership that benefits their citizens, supports economic growth, and keeps the Indo-Pacific region peaceful and open for everyone.
